Time Management – Make the Most of Your Day

Time management is something that’s discussed often and in quite a bit of detail. If you want to have success in the mortgage or real estate industry, or frankly, in any industry, there are a few secrets for how to make the most of your time.

Time Management – Success Secrets

There are thousands of articles out there about time management and how to be successful. I don’t want this to just be another article. I want this to relate to you specifically. How can you be successful in what you do everyday?

According to a Forbes article, there are a few things that successful people do differently that others. I’m going to use a few of these things and help relate it to you.

Daily Routine

Having a daily routine is vital. As Jeff Olson, author of “The Slight Edge” would say, It’s easy to do, but it’s also easy to not do.

Start off your morning with a good breakfast and maybe some light exercise. Start off reading a good book or article, or a meditating routine. Do something every morning that can help your mind wake up and focus. Face the day ahead.

Be consistent with this routine.

Plan

Have a plan for your day. What are you going to accomplish? Write it out. Schedule it. You don’t want to waste your time.

Now this doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t take breaks, in fact, breaks are very important. We can’t expect our brain to work 100 percent all day every day.

Spend an hour at a time completely focused on the task at hand, and then take a small break. Maybe it’s reading a motivational or informative book. Maybe it’s fixing a meal. Maybe it’s talking to a co-worker or a friend. Maybe it’s 10 minutes of meditating. Whatever it is, have a short, productive break.

(Browsing social media or watching Netflix doesn’t count. It’s too difficult to watch the clock and manage your time. Plus, you’re not really gaining anything from it.)

You don’t have to do everything every day. Pick what you’re going to focus on and do it well. Don’t overwhelm yourself with a huge task list each day. Not only will you dread the day ahead, but you’ll be less likely to do well on the assignments if you even do them at all.

Prospecting

Plan in a little bit of time each day that you can do something that could result in a new lead. Maybe that means putting up a new social media post. Maybe that’s reaching out to an old client or a new website visitor or working on a relationship with a potential client. Maybe it’s simply organizing your database, or planning a new lead gathering strategy.

Essentially block out a little time each day that’s completely focused on lead generation. This doesn’t mean you have to actually get a lead each day, but do something that could potentially lead to that.

time management - focus

Focus

Once you’ve planned out your day, focus on one thing at a time. Focus is key!

What’s the most important task you have to complete today? Do it first. Don’t let anything distract you from the task at hand. Close down your emails and turn off your phone while you’re working.

The Slight Edge

Remember our article on “The Slight Edge”? (Don’t remember it? Read it HERE.) The concept laid out in Jeff Olson’s book will help you succeed in every area of your life. Essentially, the slight edge is your consistent, positive effort compounded over time will equal unimaginable results.

Keep doing the good habits that you know are important. Don’t give up. Don’t get impatient. Keep moving forward, your efforts will pay off.

Success in is yours for the taking, but it’s not something you can get without a little bit of effort. How are you going to manage your time differently? How will you set up your business for success?
